Andrew Martin, born on July 6, 1962, is an English journalist, rail historian, crime novelist, and writer of both fiction and non-fiction. He has authored more than 30 books, many of which focus on railways. Martin is also a broadcaster and writes a Substack newsletter titled Reading on Trains. Raised in Yorkshire, he studied at Merton College, Oxford, and qualified as a barrister before beginning his career in journalism. His debut novel, Bilton, a satire on journalism, was published in 1999, followed by The Bobby Dazzlers in 2001, which was highly regarded by The Guardian. He is known for his detective series featuring Jim Stringer, a railwayman turned police officer during Edwardian England. The series includes titles such as The Necropolis Railway, The Blackpool Highflyer, and The Last Train to Scarborough, among others. His crime fiction also extends to standalone novels like The Yellow Diamond, A Crime of the Super-Rich, and The Winker. Under the pseudonym A. J. Martin, he authored The Night in Venice. His non-fiction works cover railway history, including titles like Underground Overground and Night Trains, as well as subjects beyond railways such as Gyles Mackrell's wartime rescue mission. Martin has edited a collection of humorous quotations and contributed to television and radio programs on topics related to railways and literature. He also performs music under the name Brunswick Green and resides in north London with his wife and sons.
