Andrew Carnegie was a Scottish-American industrialist and philanthropist born on November 25, 1835, in Dunfermline, Scotland. After immigrating to the United States at the age of 12, he began working in a cotton mill and later as a telegrapher. By the 1860s, he had made investments in various industries including railroads, oil, and bridges. Carnegie built the Carnegie Steel Company in Pittsburgh, which he sold to J. P. Morgan in 1901 for over three hundred million dollars. This sale formed the basis of the United States Steel Corporation and made him one of the richest Americans of his time, surpassing John D. Rockefeller. Carnegie was a prominent advocate for philanthropy and believed in using wealth to improve society. During the last 18 years of his life, he donated approximately 90 percent of his fortune, totaling around 350 million dollars, to charities, foundations, and educational institutions. His contributions include funding the construction of Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Peace Palace in The Hague, and establishing organizations such as the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He also supported scientific research, education, and the arts through the Carnegie Institution for Science, the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland, and the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh. Carnegie’s 1889 article titled 'The Gospel of Wealth' called on the wealthy to use their riches for societal betterment and supported progressive taxation and estate taxes, inspiring a wave of philanthropy that continues to influence charitable efforts today.
