Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock was an English filmmaker born on 13 August 1899 and died on 29 April 1980. Over a career spanning six decades, he directed more than 50 feature films. Hitchcock is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of cinema and is known as the Master of Suspense. His films are renowned for their impact on the thriller genre and continue to be widely watched and studied. Hitchcock initially worked as a technical clerk and copywriter before entering the film industry in 1919 as a title card designer. His directorial debut was the silent film The Pleasure Garden in 1926. His breakthrough came with The Lodger in 1927, which helped shape the thriller genre, and Blackmail in 1929, the first British talkie. His British films, including The 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes, are considered among the greatest of the 20th century. By 1939, Hitchcock had gained international recognition, prompting a move to Hollywood where he produced successful films such as Rebecca, Foreign Correspondent, Suspicion, Shadow of a Doubt, and Notorious. Hitchcock’s films received numerous accolades, including 46 Academy Award nominations and six wins, although he never won Best Director. His notable works include Rope, Strangers on a Train, Dial M for Murder, Vertigo, North by Northwest, The Birds, Marnie, and Frenzy. He was known for working with top Hollywood stars and became an American citizen in 1955. Hitchcock was honored with various awards, including knighthood in 1979, shortly before his death in 1980.
