Alan Arthur Johnson, born on 17 May 1950, is a British former politician associated with the Labour Party. He served as a Member of Parliament for Kingston upon Hull West and Hessle from 1997 until 2017. During his parliamentary career, Johnson held several prominent cabinet positions under Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. These included Secretary of State for Education and Skills from 2006 to 2007, Secretary of State for Health from 2007 to 2009, and Home Secretary from 2009 to 2010. He also served as Minister of State for Universities from 2003 to 2004, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions from 2004 to 2005, and President of the Board of Trade from 2005 to 2006. After leaving Parliament, Johnson was named Chancellor of the University of Hull in July 2023, succeeding Virginia Bottomley. He is affiliated with Change Working.
