About Al Capone
Alphonse Gabriel Capone, born in 1899 in New York City to Italian immigrants, was an American gangster and businessman best known for his role during the Prohibition era. He joined the Five Points Gang as a teenager and later became a bouncer at organized crime establishments. In his early twenties, Capone moved to Chicago where he became a bodyguard for Johnny Torrio, the head of a criminal syndicate that illegally supplied alcohol. Capone's rise to power was marked by his involvement in the Chicago Outfit from 1925 to 1931, a period during which he expanded bootlegging operations through violence and maintained relationships with political figures and law enforcement, which contributed to his perceived immunity. His notoriety was further amplified by events such as the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre, which tarnished his public image and intensified efforts to bring him to justice. Capone's activities drew significant law enforcement attention, culminating in charges of tax evasion. In 1931, he was convicted on five counts and sentenced to eleven years in federal prison. His incarceration was complicated by health issues associated with neurosyphilis, and he was eventually released after nearly eight years. Capone's influence waned in his final years, and he died of cardiac arrest following a stroke in 1947.
