What does Women in the World do?

The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) is an international non-governmental organization focused on empowering women scientists from the Global South. Established in 1987 and officially launched in 1993, OWSD operates under UNESCO and is hosted by The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in Trieste, Italy. The organization aims to enhance the role of women in science and technology, fostering their contributions to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. OWSD provides a range of services, including fellowships for PhD students and early-career scientists, research grants, and career development programs. It also offers training in research methodologies and leadership, along with networking opportunities to connect women scientists globally. Advocacy for gender equality in science and technology is a key focus, as is the recognition of women's achievements through awards like the Elsevier Foundation Award. With over 12,000 members, OWSD supports women from various regions, including Africa, the Arab region, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
