The Ocean Cleanup is a nonprofit environmental engineering organization founded in 2013 by Boyan Slat, who serves as its CEO. Based in the Netherlands, the organization focuses on developing and deploying innovative technologies to remove plastic pollution from oceans and capture it in rivers before it reaches the sea. Its mission is to clean up 90% of floating ocean plastic pollution by 2040. The Ocean Cleanup operates two main systems: ocean-based systems that use funnel-shaped floating barriers to collect marine debris in oceanic gyres, and river-based systems known as Interceptors™ that capture plastic in rivers. As of June 2025, the organization has successfully removed over 30 million kilograms of trash from rivers and the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The Ocean Cleanup emphasizes collaboration and aims to maximize plastic collection to ultimately eliminate the need for its services.
