SOWSHE-A (Society of Women in Safety, Health and Environment – Africa) is a non-profit organization focused on empowering female professionals in the fields of safety, health, and environment across Africa. Founded by Funmi Adegbola, the organization aims to advance gender equity in workplace safety, particularly for African women. SOWSHE-A conducts research, public demonstrations, and community campaigns to address critical issues such as the need for properly designed personal protective equipment (PPE) for black African women. The organization has received funding from the National Examination Board for Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) for a year-long study on PPE needs, which aims to inform inclusive design practices. Additionally, SOWSHE-A organizes events like the African Women in Safety Confab and Awards and the African Women in Environment, Health, Safety & Climate conference, promoting advocacy and awareness in the SHE professions.
