What does Shelter House do?

Shelter House, Inc. is a community-based, non-profit organization focused on preventing and ending homelessness and domestic violence in Northern Virginia. Established in 1981, it began as a grassroots initiative in response to the homelessness crisis in Fairfax County, providing essential emergency assistance through community volunteers. The organization offers a wide range of services, including crisis intervention, emergency shelter, safe housing, and domestic violence support through Artemis House, the only 24-hour domestic violence shelter in Fairfax County. Shelter House also provides employment assistance, mental health recovery support, and diversion programs to help individuals address the root causes of homelessness. Serving Fairfax and Loudoun County communities, Shelter House operates six major shelters and has made a significant impact, assisting thousands of individuals and families each year. Led by Executive Director Joe Meyer, Shelter House emphasizes community engagement and relies on volunteers, corporate sponsors, and donations to fulfill its mission.
