What does Portland Thorns do?

Portland Thorns FC is a professional women's soccer club located in Portland, Oregon. Competing in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), the club was founded in November 2012 and began play in 2013. It was established through the initiative of U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati, making it the first top-flight women's soccer team owned by an MLS owner. The Thorns are one of the most successful teams in NWSL history, having won three NWSL Championships and two NWSL Shields. They have made the playoffs in 10 of their 11 seasons and have consistently ranked among the top teams in the league. The club also boasts victories in the 2021 NWSL Challenge Cup and the Women's International Champions Cup. They play at Providence Park, a historic stadium known for its strong fan support, drawing the highest attendance for women's soccer in the U.S. The club is currently owned by Alex Bhathal and Lisa Bhathal Merage.
