About
The Swedish Police Authority, known as Polisen, is the national police service of Sweden, operating under the Ministry of Justice. With over 28,500 employees, including around 20,000 police officers, it is one of the largest government agencies in the country. The authority was restructured in 2015, consolidating 21 county police authorities into a unified service, which now includes 7 police regions, 25 police districts, and 95 local police districts. The Swedish Police Authority is responsible for safeguarding legal rights, preventing and detecting crime, and ensuring justice for offenders. It also focuses on emergency response, crime prevention, and counter-terrorism operations. Specialized functions include the National Forensic Centre, which manages forensic activities, and the Department of National Operations, which supports police regions and coordinates efforts against serious organized crime. The authority is led by National Police Commissioner Petra Lundh.
