Jagiellonian University is a public research university located in Kraków, Poland. Founded in 1364 by King Casimir III the Great, it is the oldest university in Poland and one of the oldest in continuous operation worldwide. The university is situated in the historic Kraków Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and has played a significant role in Polish culture and European intellectual heritage. The university comprises 16 faculties, including three medical faculties, and employs over 3,800 academic staff, including more than 650 professors. It serves approximately 40,000 students, with a notable number of international students. Jagiellonian University has a rich history, being the first in Europe to establish independent chairs in Mathematics and Astronomy. Its notable alumni include astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus and Karol Wojtyła, who later became Pope John Paul II. The campus features the Collegium Maius, the oldest building dating back to 1400, and a library with over 6 million books. The university is recognized for its research in medicine and technology and has established partnerships with institutions in various countries, including Germany and the USA.
