The Alabama School of Fine Arts (ASFA) is a public, tuition-free magnet school located in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. Established in 1971, it serves students in grades 7-12 and offers a college-preparatory education with a focus on the arts and sciences. ASFA is unique in being the only tuition-free school in the state that admits students through auditions or applications into specialized programs. ASFA provides instruction in six specialty areas: creative writing, dance, math-science, music, theatre arts, and visual arts. Students engage in a rigorous academic curriculum alongside their artistic or scientific training, preparing them for college and careers. The school boasts a nationally recognized faculty and has a strong track record of student success, with the Class of 2022 earning $8.6 million in scholarships. ASFA also offers partial boarding for out-of-area students and hosts various programs, including Open Houses and summer camps, to enrich the educational experience.
