The door to Compartment 12 creaked softly, swaying with the steady rhythm of the train. It hung half open, almost unwilling to surrender the secret hidden inside. Henri Duval paused at the entrance, his arms crossed as his sharp eyes swept across the room with calm precision. Nothing appeared disturbed. No overturned furniture, no signs of struggle—only an eerie stillness. Even the train itself seemed quieter here, its distant rumble muted beneath the weight of the mystery. Jonathan Fraser, the outspoken American oil tycoon, was gone. The bed remained perfectly made. The leather chair beside the window stood empty, its cushions untouched. In the corner rested a polished cane, carefully placed as though its owner intended to return. Duval noticed it immediately. He stepped farther into the compartment. A trace of expensive cologne lingered in the air, rich and unmistakable—the scent of a man who enjoyed commanding attention. The room still carried warmth, proof that someone had occupied it not long ago. Yet aside from a single gold ring glimmering beneath the amber lamp, every personal belonging had vanished. Duval lifted the ring carefully. Inside, a short inscription had been engraved: “To Jonathan, my only son. R.F.” Not merely jewelry. Something sentimental. Perhaps something important. Behind him, the conductor hovered nervously in the doorway. “Locked from the inside?” Duval asked without looking up. “Yes, monsieur,” the conductor replied. “After dinner I always inspect the compartments. Mr. Fraser’s door was locked, which seemed normal. I knocked, but there was no answer. Ten minutes later I returned and still heard nothing, so I opened it with the master key.” “And the window?” The conductor gestured toward the narrow compartment window. It was firmly sealed—built that way intentionally to prevent passengers from attempting dangerous escapes from the moving train. Duval pressed a hand against the latch and tested it himself. It refused to move. “No one left through here,” he murmured. His eyes narrowed slightly. “Unless they learned how to fly.”
