Heather Ann Thompson is an American historian, author, activist, and professor based in Detroit, Michigan. She is known for her award-winning work on social justice and American history, notably winning the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for History and the 2016 Bancroft Prize for her book Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and Its Legacy. This publication was also a finalist for the Cundill Prize in History, the National Book Award, and the Los Angeles Times Book Award. Thompson has received numerous honors for her contributions to social justice and scholarship, including the Life-Long Dedication to Social Justice Award, the Alliance of Families for Justice Award, and the Regents Distinguished Award for Public Service. She was awarded the Pitt Professorship of American History and Diplomacy at the University of Cambridge during 2019-2020 and earned a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2022. Additionally, she has been recognized as a distinguished lecturer by the Organization of American Historians.
