Harvey Bernard Milk was an American politician notable for being the first openly gay man elected to public office in California. Born and raised in New York, Milk acknowledged his homosexuality during adolescence, though he kept his sexual orientation private for many years. The social changes of the 1960s influenced him to revise his views on individual freedom and sexual expression. In 1972, Milk moved to San Francisco and opened a camera store, establishing himself in the Castro neighborhood, which was experiencing an influx of gay residents. He ran for city supervisor in 1973 and, despite resistance from the existing gay political establishment, gained media attention and community support through colorful campaigns. His persistence in running for multiple supervisor positions and for the California State Assembly reflected his increasing influence and commitment to gay rights. Elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977, Milk served nearly eleven months before his assassination on November 27, 1978, along with Mayor George Moscone, by former supervisor Dan White. During his time in office, Milk sponsored significant legislation including a bill to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation in public accommodations, housing, and employment, which was enacted with broad support. Although his political career was brief, Milk became an enduring icon and martyr for the LGBTQ community, recognized as a pivotal figure in American history. Posthumously, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009, and in 2002, he was described as the most significant openly LGBTQ official ever elected in the United States.
