What does Sacramento Zoo do?

The Sacramento Zoo is a zoological institution located in William Land Park, Sacramento, California. Established on June 2, 1927, it began as a small 4.2-acre zoo with 40 animals, primarily featuring California wildlife. Over the years, it has expanded to 14.3 acres and now houses around 500 animals. The zoo is known for its diverse exhibits, including big cats like lions and cheetahs, and offers attractions such as a carousel with uniquely carved wooden animals and scenic walking trails. It is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and operates successful breeding programs. The Dr. Murray E. Fowler Veterinary Hospital, completed in 2006, supports the health and care of the animals. The Sacramento Zoo is currently in the process of relocating to Elk Grove, with plans for a new, larger facility expected to open by 2029.
