Dame Judith Olivia Dench is an English actress born on 9 December 1934. Recognized as one of Britain's greatest actresses, she is known for her versatility in roles across stage and screen. Her career spans over seven decades during which she has received numerous awards, including an Academy Award, a Tony Award, two Golden Globe Awards, and multiple BAFTA and Olivier Awards. Dench made her professional debut in 1957 with the Old Vic Company and performed in several of Shakespeare's plays, such as Ophelia in Hamlet, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, and Lady Macbeth in Macbeth. Her early work was primarily in theatre, but she also entered film, winning a BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer. In 1968, she received standout reviews for her role as Sally Bowles in the musical Cabaret. Throughout the next twenty years, Dench established herself as a significant British theatre performer through her work with the National Theatre Company and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Her television work during this period also received critical acclaim, with starring roles in the series A Fine Romance and As Time Goes By. Although her film appearances were initially infrequent, she gained international fame as M in the James Bond franchise, starting with GoldenEye in 1995 and appearing in eight films until Spectre in 2015. Dench has been nominated for the Academy Award eight times and won for her role as Queen Elizabeth I in Shakespeare in Love in 1998. She has received several honorary awards, including the BAFTA Fellowship and the British Film Institute Fellowship.
