About Greg Lake

Greg Lake was an English musician, singer, and songwriter known for his influential role in progressive rock. He was a founding member of the bands King Crimson and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Born and raised in Dorset, Lake began playing guitar at the age of 12 and wrote his first song, Lucky Man, at the same age. He became a full-time musician at 17, performing in various rock bands before joining King Crimson as lead singer and bassist through an invitation from Robert Fripp, his friend and fellow Dorset guitarist. The band achieved commercial success with their debut album, In the Court of the Crimson King, released in 1969. Lake departed from King Crimson in 1970 to focus on Emerson, Lake & Palmer, where he contributed as a singer, guitarist, bassist, and producer. His work with ELP produced several popular songs including Lucky Man and From the Beginning, which charted in the UK and US. He also pursued a solo career, beginning with the 1975 single I Believe in Father Christmas, which reached number two in the UK charts. Lake released three solo albums with his band and collaborated with other artists, including a brief stint with Asia in 1983. Throughout his career, he maintained occasional reunions with ELP and toured as a solo artist well into the 21st century. Beyond performing, Lake supported emerging artists as a producer and was involved in charity work for the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. He was recognized in 2026 by Loudwire as one of the greatest progressive rock singers of all time. Lake passed away in London in 2016 at the age of 69 due to pancreatic cancer.
