About Fannie Lou Hamer

Fannie Lou Hamer was an American voting and women's rights activist, community organizer, and leader of the civil rights movement. She served as vice-chair of the Freedom Democratic Party and represented it at the 1964 Democratic National Convention. Hamer played a significant role in organizing Mississippi's Freedom Summer alongside the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. She was a co-founder of the National Women's Political Caucus, an organization dedicated to recruiting, training, and supporting women of all races seeking political office. Beginning her civil rights activism in 1962, she dedicated nearly a decade to fighting for racial equality and voting rights until her health declined. Known for her use of spiritual hymns and biblical quotes, she demonstrated resilience in leading efforts for Black women in Mississippi amidst threats, harassment, assaults, and violence from racists, including law enforcement officials. Hamer actively encouraged thousands of Black residents in Mississippi to register to vote and supported disenfranchised individuals through initiatives such as the Freedom Farm Cooperative. She ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1964 but was defeated, and she also campaigned for the Mississippi State Senate in 1971. In 1970, she led legal actions against the government of Sunflower County for ongoing illegal segregation. Hamer died in 1977 at the age of 59, and her memorial service was attended by many, with U.S. Ambassador Andrew Young delivering the eulogy. She was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2025 and was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1993.
