About Colm Toibin
Colm Tóibín is an Irish novelist, short story writer, essayist, journalist, critic, playwright, and poet born on 30 May 1955. His literary career began with the publication of his first novel, The South, in 1990. He has received critical acclaim for works such as The Blackwater Lightship, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and The Master, a fictionalized exploration of the inner life of Henry James, also shortlisted for the Booker Prize. The Master won the 2006 International Dublin Literary Award, one of the richest literary honors in the world. Tóibín's novel Nora Webster was awarded the Hawthornden Prize, and The Magician, a fictionalized account of the life of Thomas Mann, received the Folio Prize. His contributions to the arts led to his election by fellow artists into Aosdána. In 2021, he was awarded the David Cohen Prize, a prestigious biennial literary award. Tóibín has also held academic positions, succeeding Martin Amis as professor of creative writing at the University of Manchester. From 2017 to 2022, he served as chancellor of the University of Liverpool. Currently, he is the Irene and Sidney B. Silverman Professor of the Humanities at Columbia University in New York City.
