The Appraisal Foundation (TAF) is a non-profit organization based in Washington, DC, dedicated to advancing the valuation profession. Established in 1987, TAF sets standards for real estate valuation and represents over 100 organizations and government agencies interested in this field. It was created in response to the savings and loan crisis of the mid-1980s to improve appraisal practices across the country. TAF's mission focuses on promoting education, ensuring impartial and ethical appraisals, and upholding public trust. The foundation develops congressionally authorized standards, including the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP), which are widely recognized in the United States. TAF also establishes minimum qualification criteria for appraisers and provides voluntary guidance on valuation methods and techniques. Its work supports a regulatory system that is integral to the U.S. economy and consumer protection.
