The organization is led by Dr. Tom Frieden, a former director of the CDC, and became an independent entity in 2022. It has treated over 2 million patients for hypertension and collaborates with governments and civil society in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in Africa, India, Ethiopia, and Nigeria.
