About
Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) is a public, historically Black land-grant university established in 1876. It is the second oldest public institution of higher education in Texas and the first state-supported college for African Americans in the state. As an independent member of the Texas A&M University System, PVAMU is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service, catering to a diverse student body. Originally founded to train Black teachers, PVAMU has expanded its academic offerings over the years. It now provides a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs in fields such as agriculture, arts and sciences, engineering, nursing, and industrial education. The university plays a significant role in supporting small and medium-sized communities and businesses, while also promoting access to education for underrepresented groups.
