The Houston Independent School District (Houston ISD) is the largest public school district in Texas and the eighth-largest in the United States. It serves a diverse population of approximately 189,000 to 215,000 students across 273 to 284 schools, including elementary, middle, high, charter, and special education campuses. The district operates independently from the City of Houston and is governed by a nine-member Board of Education. With around 27,000 employees, it is one of the largest employers in the Houston area. Houston ISD offers a wide range of educational programs, including K-12 academic courses, special education, and early childhood education. The district emphasizes college and career readiness through Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs, as well as career and technical education pathways. Additionally, it provides various support services, such as mental health counseling, nutrition programs, and after-school activities, to ensure that all students have access to quality education and resources.
