DONA International is the first and largest doula training and certification organization in the world. Founded in 1992 by a group of maternal-infant health experts, it is a nonprofit dedicated to promoting high-quality birth and postpartum support. The organization changed its name from Doulas of North America to DONA International in 2004 to reflect its global reach. DONA International's mission is to train and certify doulas who provide emotional and physical support to pregnant women before, during, and after labor. With over 12,000 certified doulas practicing in 56 countries, the organization sets the standard for the profession through evidence-based training. It recognizes the importance of continuous labor support and emotional assistance for mothers and their partners during the birthing process. The organization is governed by a board of directors elected annually by its members, ensuring a strong and engaged leadership structure.
