What does Camp I am Me do?

Camp I Am Me, operated by the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting burn survivors, primarily children and teenagers. Established in 1989, it provides safe and non-judgmental environments where participants can build self-esteem and receive emotional support through various free programs and activities. The flagship Summer Camp, held since 1991 at YMCA Camp Duncan, is the only American Camping Association-accredited burn camp in the U.S. The organization offers a range of free programs throughout the year, including a one-week Summer Camp for children aged 8-17 who have experienced burn injuries. Activities at the camp include traditional outdoor pursuits like archery and boating, as well as creative options such as crafts and music. All programs provide lodging, meals, health center access, and transportation at no cost to participants, thanks to the support of volunteers and donors from various sectors, including the fire service and healthcare community.
